Lucan East Educate Together National School
Lucan East E.T.N.S. is the fifth Educate Together School to open in Lucan. The school opened on September 1st, 2008 in a purpose built school building. The school was set up to cater for the increasing population in the area and the demand for a new school was evident. In our first year we had 88 students and our teachers were Eddie, Gráinne, Jenny, Linda, Sinéad, Linda Jane, Drew, Mairéad and Áine. Judith Neuman acted as school manager until the board of management was set up under Fionnuala Ward. The minister for education Batt O’ Keefe came to officially open the school and we made the front page of the Irish Independent.
In our second year numbers in the school grew to 160, rising to 227 in our third year and 295 in our fourth. Our parent/teacher association was set up and have been a constant support to the school ever since. Construction work began in March 2010 on the new school building which is an extension of the original. The new school structure was completed in August of 2011, in time to welcome back staff and students after the summer holidays.
We now have 450 pupils and two outreach class for children with autism. The school continues to grow from strength to strength and is now firmly established in the local area. In December 2017, our principal Eddie left us for pastures new and we welcomed Grainne McManus as our new principal.
At Lucan East E.T.N.S. we are guided by the four main principles of Educate Together i.e. the school is equality based, co-educational, child-centred and democratically run. Educate Together schools operate under a legal obligation to provide equality of access and esteem to children, irrespective of their social, cultural or religious backgrounds. The school delivers an ethical education programme called Learn Together, which consists of the following four strands: Moral and Spiritual Education, Belief Systems, Ethics and the Environment and Equality and Justice.
In 2018, Lucan East ETNS celebrated 10years and we are very proud of what we have achieved over this time. We are looking ahead to a bright future where we hope to serve all the children of our community and help them to achieve their potential.
