This week is energy awareness week at Lucan East ETNS. Below is our plan for the week. This is a very current issue and really resonates with all of the children.
Energy Awareness Week 2014
Monday 3.02.14
- All bin detectives and power rangers meet in Linda’s room for a Green Schools meeting 8:40 – 9:10 – ask them to check if all classrooms have ‘Bin Detective, Power Ranger’ and ‘Energy saver Checklist’ posters displayed, report back if not and Linda will provide one.
- Meter reading to be taken for comparisons with end of the week (gas, meter readings in cubic metres x 11.4198 and get unit cost from bill – do the same the following week)
- Energy saving spot checks during break and lunch time – Hannah and Ritika
- Junior Infants to read the big book ‘Guzzler’ and complete the junior ‘Guzzler’ worksheets
- Lesson 2 Energy to be completed with a group of 5th and 6th class students – poster on ‘different worlds’ to be designed for Green schools display. Brainstorming ‘what is energy conservation?’ Children to feedback to the rest of the class
- Linda to collect game from South Dublin County Council, Tallaght
Tuesday 4.02.14
- All bin detectives and power rangers meet in Linda’s room for a Green Schools meeting 8:40 – 9:10 – ask them to check if all classrooms have their 3 bins (black, white and red) named and labelled with pictures of what can go in each one, report back if not and Linda will provide.
- Senior Infants to read the big book ‘Guzzler’ and complete the Junior ‘Guzzler’ worksheets
- Energy saving spot checks during break and lunch time – Salyah and Larissa
- Lesson 1 Energy Conservation to be completed with a group of 3rd and 4th class students – ‘Switch it off and go have fun’ posters to be made’. Brainstorming ‘what is energy conservation?’ Children to feedback to the rest of the class
Wednesday 5.02.14
- 1st class to read the big book ‘Guzzler’ and make wind mills. (Option to complete junior ‘Guzzler’ worksheets during the week).
- 2nd class to read the big book ‘Guzzler’ and complete ‘brushing our teeth’ experiment – click on the link below for lesson plan
- Energy saving spot checks during break and lunch time – Ann and Elisei
Thursday
- 3rd class to read the big book ‘Guzzler’, carry out ‘CD case’ experiment and complete worksheets demonstrating findings for display
- 4th class to read the big book ‘Guzzler’ and carry ‘different worlds’ posters
- No written homework and all children asked to fill in the online ‘Energy Pledge’ at home with their families
Friday
- Wear green for energy awareness
- Measuring and Saving Energy from ‘Primary Science’ – Linda and students from 4th – 6th class, calculations to measure how much energy we used during our Energy Awareness week
- 3rd and 4th class Energy table quiz
- 5th and 6th class Energy table quiz
- Assembly – 1 child from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th to present something they learned/completed/designed during Energy Awareness week – e.g. read out their ‘Energy Pledge’, explain their experiment, explain why they made windmills
– 5th Class Litter pickers (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday mornings)
– Bin Detectives & Power Rangers – ongoing
– Removal of compost to new compost bin – Billy (caretaker)
– Removal of recycling from recycling depot to outside green bin – cleaners
– Removal of general rubbish from classrooms to outside black bin – cleaners
Green schools committee – print out sample of Energy Pledges to be read aloud as assembly
Announce Energy Awareness week on intercom
Offer assistance to junior classes during Green Schools activities
Announce class winner as a result of spot checks at break and lunch times
Collect names from teachers to go into draw to accompany Green Schools coordinator in May if we receive new flag
Read these names out at assembly
