School Library
The school library is back open for business and it is proving to be very popular with some of its visitors. Many students helped with sorting and labelling the books. We have enlisted the help of our parent body to assist with some of the librarian duties. Some of the children who have borrowed books enjoyed reading them at the library before taking them home to enjoy them fully. Thanks to Tom, the Parents’ Association and all of the student helpers for getting this very important aspect of the school back up and running.
Cycling
Cycling has started in both 5th classes this term. The cycling safety course, which is delivered by South Dublin County Council, is very beneficial for the students who learn how to keep both themselves and other road users safe on our roads. The instructors work with all of the children from complete novice to those who cycle to school regularly. It is important that the children are aware of the correct etiquette when cycling. The cycling course culminates with a supervised cycling trip in the local area.
Peace Proms
For a number of years now we have had children from Lucan East participate in this cross-border multi-faceted concert. This year Carol worked with a dedicated group of children who were passionate about performing at the show. The children arrived in the school early on Saturday morning to get the bus to the RDS for the pre-concert rehearsals. By all accounts the show itself was amazing spectacle and we are so proud of everyone who participated during the year and on the day. A special word of thanks to Carol for her work on this and also to Laura who accompanied the children on the day.
Safer Internet Day Talks
We celebrated Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, February 7th. There was lots of hype on the day and it s hugely important to highlight the ways that the children can stay safe online. Many of the classes had lessons based on this topic this week. We were lucky enough to have students from Griffeen Community College who gave us a talk on internet safety and we would like to thank them for their help. Next week we will continue with this important topic by inviting Barnardos in to complete internet safety workshops and talks with many of the classes. Check out our Twitter Feed for lots of photographs from the day.
Remember, the parents’ advice section of the Webwise website provides some invaluable information and tips for parents when it comes to internet safety. You will find this information here. Similarly, the videos section may prove useful if you are concerned about a particular area and it can be accessed by click here.
Midterm Break
School will be closed on Thursday, 16th and Friday, 17th of February for midterm break. We wish all of our school community an enjoyable long weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Monday, February 20th.
