Assembly
In the last week we had junior and senior assembly in the hall. We spoke about the new year and how different people and cultures celebrate the beginning of the new year. We talked about what families like to do around new year and shared some of our hopes and plans for the year ahead.
Junior Infant Parent-Teacher Meetings
Junior infant parent-teacher meeting dates have now been confirmed for Tuesday, January 31st and Wednesday, February 1st. Please contact Jo or Rebeccca if you have any difficulty booking a time for your child’s meeting on Aladdin. These meetings are a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and visit their classroom.
GAA Blitzes
GAA is continuing to prove very popular in the school this year. With the competitive inter-school matches ending last term the boys and girls continued to enjoy games here in Lucan East. The coaches have been organising blitzes between classes in an effort to promote the game and get as many children as possible involved.
We have had promotional posters in the school and these have further contributed to the hype surrounding the games. The 3rd and 4th class blitz final was held last week and the supporting classes could be heard throughout the school as the match kicked off in near freezing temperatures. This didn’t impact the level of skill and enthusiasm on show. Well done to both teams for their sporting behaviour and a wonderful game!
Morning Helpers
This term we are enlisting the help of some 6th class students to help out at the roundabout in the mornings. They will be wearing blue bibs if you need any assistance with younger children. We are doing this on a trial basis and thank you to 6th class for their help in this area.
Digital Skills
Some of the children from 1st to 6th class are going to be working on their digital skills through the means of a new online portal. The OLUS platform is based on self-led, differentiated learning for students. We are using the platform for a number of weeks and the children will be working on iPad, Chromebook and specific app skills. We are very excited to be using this platform to improve our ability to manipulate the Google workspace and some additional apps.
Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day will be marked on February 7th in schools around the country. The newly formed Lucan East Student ICT committee is already thinking of ideas that will help to promote the day and highlight the importance of internet safety for all.
The parents’ advice section of the Webwise website provides some invaluable information and tips for parents when it comes to internet safety. You will find this information here. Similarly, the videos section may prove useful if you are concerned about a particular area. It can be accessed by click here.
Tidy-up Thursdays
Finland Class kicked off our ‘Tidy-up Thursdays’ initiative this week in an effort to keep on top of some of the litter that can be found in our area. Throughout the winter months it can be difficult with windy days and beds of leaves but they did a fantastic job yesterday when gathering crisp packets, plastic bottles and other general waste. Many of the classes in the school have pledged to help maintain our yard as we feel it is a very important area of our environmental care. Thanks Finland class!
